Have you ever noticed that the paint color or a product you picked out at the store looked different when you brought it home? Different lighting conditions such as; fluorescent, incandescent, halogen, LED, and Natural sunlight to name a few can affect how we see color in our homes. For example, colors tend to look more vibrant and saturated in well-lit rooms, while they appear dull and less intense in low-lit areas.

What is Ambient Lighting?

Ambient lighting, sometimes called “General Lighting”, refers to the main source of light in a room, and sets the mood for the space. Understanding what kind of ambient light you have in your home and what kind you are using to view a color is an important thing to consider when choosing a major feature in your home like cabinetry, counters, flooring, wall colors, etc.

View a Sample in Your Space

The best way to check colors for your interior design is to view a sample in person in the room where you plan to place it. However, this may not always be an option when you’re purchasing certain products that don’t have samples like large appliances, or if you are building a new home and the space is not available. If you do have the option, I highly recommend it!

It’s also good to view the final sample selection side by side under the same lighting so you can get a feel for how the counters, cabinets, tile, flooring, etc. will look together before you make a final decision.
